Ida Loses Strength Over Land

Ida is no longer a hurricane. The storm weakened as it moved across the mountains of Nicaragua and is now classified as a tropical depression. Thursday, Ida gained steam in the Southwest Caribbean and briefly became a category one hurricane. Hurricane Ida was the 3rd hurricane of the of the 2009 season. It struck the Nicaraguan coast with top winds of 75 miles per hour and heavy rains. Bridges, schools and electrical towers were damaged, but no deaths were reported. The National Hurricane Center says Ida may eventually dump as much as 20 inches of rain on Central America. As of Friday morning, the system is crossing into Honduras with maximum winds of 35 miles per hour. Forecasters say Ida may emerge into the Caribbean Saturday and eventually gain strength again over open water. Some forecast models show the storm moving north into the Gulf of Mexico early next week. For the latest storm track and information on storm preparation, visit our website: wmfe.org/storms.
