Local Unitarians Report Growth As Survey Finds Overall 'Religiosity' Declines

March 13, 2009 -- A survey on religion that came out this week found the percentage of Americans who claim no religious affiliation nearly doubled over the last two decades to 15 percent. Mainline Protestant denominations saw some of the biggest losses in their congregations, while Catholicism remained relatively stable, mainly because of Latino immigration in the south. Evangelical churches posted significant gains. And another denomination that says it's growing is Unitarian Universalism, where dogma takes a back seat to independent thought. 90.7's David Pitman visited the office of Reverend Jay Deacon, the Interim Minister of the Unitarian Church of Orlando. Rev. Deacan says he sees newcomers from all faiths.
