Orange County Receives Grant To Fight Gum Disease Among Pregnant Women

March 6, 2009 -- The Orange County Health Department announced this week that it's getting a grant to help fight gum disease in women who are pregnant, or may become pregnant. Some studies have found there's a relationship between gum disease and premature birth, low birth weight, and infant mortality. The $100,000 grant comes from the philanthropic arm of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida. It will be used to help about 300, mostly African-American, women in the Pine Hills area find affordable dental care. 90.7's David Pitman called up Orange County Health Director Dr. Kevin Sherin. Dr. Sherin says some studies have shown a link between gum disease and bad pregnancy outcomes, while other studies say there's no link, or a weak one, at best.
