UCF Criminologist Says New OC Yearly Murder Record Comes as No Surprise

December 29, 2008 -- For the second time since 2006, Orange County is ending the year with a record number of murders. The current homicide total, with a few days left in 2008, is 123 people, breaking the 2006 record by two. The vast majority of those killings happened 'outside' Orlando, which is reporting 42 murders, shy of the '06 record of 49. The spike in murders in Orange County comes despite a host of new initiatives and stepped-up patrols that helped lower other forms of violent crime. 90.7's David Pitman visited UCF Sociology department chair and criminologist Dr. Jay Corzine, who said he wasn't surprised to see murders increase this year over last year.
