Thrift Stores Report Rising Sales, Shrinking Donations, With Sour Economy

November 21, 2008 -- We're a week away from "Black Friday", the day after Thanksgiving that, traditionally, marks the start of the holiday shopping season. With the economy in a tailspin, more people in Central Florida have been turning to thrift stores to save money on everyday items, so they'll have more to spend on gifts this holiday season. Traffic and sales at many thrift stores are up, while donations are down. Goodwill of Central Florida operates nearly two dozen thrift stores, including its headquarters on South Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando. That's where 90.7's David Pitman met up with one of the company's vice presidents, Judith Pariseau. She says donations are off by about ten percent compared to this time last year.
