Climate Change and Hurricanes

(April 10, 2008) -- With just under two months to go until the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season, Dr. William Gray and his forecasting team at Colorado State University have issued their first revised forecast. They're bumping up the numbers slightly, with 15 named storms expected. Eight of those should become hurricanes, and four will grow to category "3" or stronger. Yesterday, we heard from John Passacantando, the head of Greenpeace USA, who said global climate change is already being felt here in Florida in the form of more storms of greater intensity, and more wildfires. Today, we hear from National Weather Service Meteorologist Dennis Decker. 90.7's David Pitman asked him if it's correct to assert that global climate change has had a direct effect on the hurricanes of the past few years.
