St. Sen. Mike Haridopolos Speaks Out Against Prop. Tax/Sales Tax Swap

(March 26, 2008) The debate is intensifying over the property tax reform proposal that is on its way to the November ballot. Next month, the state Taxation and Budget Reform Commission (TBRC) will hold one more vote on the measure, which would shave about a third off property taxes by eliminating the portion collected for schools. The lost revenue would be replaced with a combination of a one-percent increase in the state sales tax, and expanding taxes to cover certain goods and services which are currently exempt. Yesterday, economist Dr. Hank Fishkind, who was paid by the TBRC to conduct a study of this idea, reiterated his support for it, in part because it would end the exemptions, which he calls loopholes. Republican Senator Mike Haridopolos of Brevard County is one of the leading opponents of the plan, and he spoke to 90.7's David Pitman from his office in Tallahassee to explain why.
