August 17, 2007—The astronauts aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour say they fully support mission control’s decision not to send spacewalkers out to repair two damaged heat tiles. I’ve gone over the possible results of a burn-through in previous blogs, so I won’t belabor the point. Spacewalkers Clayton Anderson and Dave Williams of Canada will venture outside on Saturday to help pave the way for the re-location of a set of solar power panels called P6. The panels were first installed on Shuttle mission STS-97 in 2000. The mission’s embroidered crew patch design at the left shows how the gold panels of P6 was attached to the station sticking straight up the mast of a ship. Anderson and Williams will prepare the panels to be relocated to the left side of the Space Station by the crew of Discovery during October’s scheduled mission.

Regarding NASA’s decision to forego repairs to the Space Station, I had a great conversation about it today with NPR’s Ira Flatow on Talk of the Nation "Science Friday". There’s a link at the top, if you’d like to listen in again.
