Arts Connection for April 13-14, 2007

This week, a report on how property tax reform may impact local arts and cultural groups. Also, highlights from this week's arts calendar, including concerts in Oviedo, Melbourne & Daytona Beach, and the annual Equifest in DeLand.

ART NEWS----

Debbie Fahmie was named Osceola County Teacher of the Year last month.  Fahmie is the music teacher at Cypress Elementary, which was featured on the March 23/24 edition of The Arts Connection.

Connect with Music will offer another round of classes for babies and their adults, beginning Tuesday, April 17 at UCF and at Park Lake Presbyterian Church

United Arts is offering a series of Grant Workshops for those individuals and organizations interested in applying for arts grants, including the Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs Cultural Tourism Funding, Organizational Project Grants and Professional Development Grants from United Arts, and grants from the Lake County Cultural Affairs Council and Seminole Cultural Arts Council.

Cultural grant programs could face cuts, based on current legislation being debated in Tallahassee. The House & Senate are planning to cut the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, although the amount differse widely - the house is proposing a 70.4 % cut, while the Senate version has a 21.7% cut.  Property Tax reform will also hit arts groups and other social service organizations, as many groups receive direct or indirect funding from local governments.

The Museum of Florida Art presents EquiFest this Saturday from 10am-5pm, as the opening of their art exhibit, EQUUS III - The Art of the Horse.

Orlando Repertory Theatre presents SEUSSICAL THE MUSICAL, opening this weekend and running through May 12 - there's also a Resource Guide for parents & teachers.

The Concert Series at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Oviedo presents Ayako Yonetani & Friends, this Saturday at 7pm.  The free concert features local musicians and young performers from Juilliard.

The Brevard Symphony's next concert has a program chosen by the orchestra - music of Debussy, Bartok, and Knoxville Summer of 1915 by Samuel Barber, with soprano Rebecca Lueker. Music Director Chris Confessore and Rebecca Lueker will appear at the West Melbourne Barnes & Noble on Sunday from 2-4pm.

The Australian Chamber Orchestra comes to Daytona Beach this Tuesday at 7:30pm at the News Journal Center, presented by Central Florida Cultural Endeavors.

From the Arts Connection Archives - a story from April of 2005 - that's when United Arts unveiled a new category of corporate giving - the Business Leadership Council, where companies make a 3-year committment to support local arts at a minimum of $1000 a year. When the campaign kicked off in February 2005, the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce sponsored a luncheon where the guest speaker was Marie McKee, Senior Vice President for Corning, Incorporated, and President of Steuben Glass, an art glass studio that's a subsidiary of Corning. She is also director of the Corning Museum of Glass. Marie talked to local business leaders about Corning's committment to the arts.

Poetic Logic----

Another archive conversation, with poet Kelle Groom, who talked with poetry producer Sara Schlossman.  Kelle's book, Luckily, won the Bronze Medal in the Florida Book Awards last month.
