Arts Connection for January 26-27, 2007

As the Zora Neal Hurston Festival wraps up, a look at Hurston as anthropologist. A look at the new exhibits at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum and the Orlando Philharmonic's concert Saturday, and a conversation with Colson Whitehead, who will appear at Winter with the Writers at Rollins College.

Learn about cultural events at the new Red Chair Project website, including the upcoming ArtsFest, an 11-day festival of free cultural events.  The kick-off is Thursday, Feb. 1st at Central Park in Winter Park, with the Rosie O'Grady's Pipe Band, and the Enzian Theatre's Popcorn Flick, The Muppet Movie.

The Zora Neal Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities concludes this weekend with the Street Festival of the Arts in Eatonville.  Bobb Womack & Fred Hammond perform, and authors will appear as part of the Words & Voices series. The 18th festival is one of the highlights of the cultural calendar, and it honors the writer, playwright and folklorist who was raised here in Eatonville.  Bill Dudley talks to UF professor Irma McClaurin about Hurston's work as an anthropologist.

Four next art exhibits opened last week at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, including CROSSING THE LINE - CONTEMPORARY AND MODERN AFRICAN AMERICAN ART FROM THE COLLECTION OF JACQUELINE BRADLEY AND CLARENCE OTIS, JR.  There are 2 other exhibits of African American art, as well as a rare opportunity to see Henri Matisse's JAZZ.  For information, call 407-646-2526.

All this week, WMFE's In-Depth series, How Shall We Grow, has explored possible scenarios to manage the expected growth in Central Florida population.  In this report from the Florida Humanities Council, a panel discusses the impact of such growth, including several cultural personalities, including author Michael Grunwald, photographer John Moran and Central Florida nature writer, Bill Belleville.

The Orlando Philharmonic presents two major works on their Saturday night concert - Mozart's Jupiter Symphony, and The Planets by Gustav Holst.  The OPO's new Music Director, Christopher Wilkens, talks about the Holst work; he will also give a pre-concert lecture at 7pm Saturday night (Jan. 27) backstage at the Bob Carr Auditorium, and the concert starts at 8pm.  For information, call 407-770-0071.

Winter with the Writers is an annual Literary Festival at Rollins College; on 4 Thursdays, writers from across the country come to Central Florida for masterclasses and readings.  Next Thursday, Feb. 1, Colson Whitehead will appear; his first novel won the Quality Paperback Book Club's New Voices award, and his 2nd, John Henry Days was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.  The Arts Connection's Sara Schlossmann talks with Colson about his latest book, Apex Hides the Hurt.  Whitehead will give a Masterclass at 4pm on Feb. 1 in the Bush Auditorium (free & open to the public) and his reading at 8pm is in the Tiedtke Concert Hall at Rollins College.  For information, call 407-646-2666.
