New Jobless Report A Mixed Bag For Metro Orlando

July 18, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando - Florida's unemployment rate ticked down in June, but it is now higher than the national rate. New jobless numbers out today are a mixed bag for both the state and the Orlando area.

The state's jobless rate in June was 6.2 percent. That's a slight dip from the previous month when it was 6.3 percent.

But the national unemployment rate is 6.1 percent, making this the first time in more than a year that Florida's rate is the higher number.

The state led the US in June job growth, though, gaining more than 37,000 jobs. That’s a turnaround from May when the state shed nearly 18,000 jobs.

The jobless rate for metro Orlando was 5.8 percent in June, a small climb from 5.7 percent in May.

State analysts have said Florida’s economy is recovering, but slowly. They note that the numbers may reflect some long-term unemployed people resuming their job searches.
