Legislature Won't Appeal Court's Redistricting Decision  July 15, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando - Florida Senate President Don Gaetz and House Speaker Will Weatherford say they won't appeal a judge's ruling to redraw the boundaries of two congressional districts. [Infographic by Ernest Duffoo, WMFE] However, in a statement today Gaetz and Weatherford, both republicans, asked the judge to clarify when the districts 5 and 10 should be redrawn. They said changing the districts before the 2014 elections could cause “chaos and confusion” and threaten the rights of military and overseas voters. Deirde Macnab, the League of Women Voters’s Florida President, called the decision a triumph for Florida voters. She said the league is waiting to see when the redrawing will take place. “Very clearly the judge said that the current congressional map, as drawn, is invalid and unconstitutional," Macnab said. "Now, what exactly is going to happen in the next very few days and weeks we are going to have to wait, that decision is up to the judge, and we are waiting with our ears wide open to hear what he decides.” A circuit judge ruled last week that congressional districts five and ten were both drawn illegally and unconstitutionally. His strongly worded decision followed a long court battle between the League of Women Voters and the legislature. |
