TS Arthur Brings Minimal Impact To Central FL, May Hit NC As Hurricane

July 2, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando - The tropical storm watch from Flagler Beach to Sebastian Inlet has been called off as the Atlantic hurricane season's first named system moves away from Central Florida's shore, but some rain and gusty winds are still possible. Tropical Storm Arthur's new track shows it may be taking aim at North Carolina's coast.

As of the latest update, the system is packing 60 mile-per-hour winds. It’s expected to strengthen into a hurricane by Thursday. Forecasters expect the storm to have a significant impact on North Carolina’s Outer Banks as it skims close or possibly makes landfall before moving northeast out to sea.

Arthur’s impact will be minimal in our area, but noticeable, according to Florida Public Radio Emergency Network Meteorologist Jeff Huffman.

“For east-central Florida, rain bands will become steadier and heavier by this afternoon as deeper moisture and energy rotate around the system,” says Huffman. “Tropical storm force winds are only possible immediately along the coast. However, wind gusts of 30 to 40 miles per hour may accompany a few rain squalls further inland through tonight.”

He says coastal communities will also see near-shore waves of four to seven feet, minor beach erosion, and a high risk for rip currents.

Conditions in our area are forecast to improve by late Thursday.
