Orlando City Soccer Capitalizes on World Cup Fever

June 26, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando -- By Thursday afternoon, the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team will know if it has survived the so-called World Cup "Group of Death." In the meantime, Orlando City Soccer is capitalizing on the tournament.

As the Orlando City Lions prepare to join the major league, the big question is whether Central Floridians care enough about soccer to support an MLS team.

The World Cup is helping answer that question – by feeding fan enthusiasm.  Jhamie Chin is press officer for Orlando City Soccer, which is co-sponsoring a viewing party for Thursday’s U.S. match.

Chin says, “The World Cup is just that one time [every few years] when it creates that soccer fever.  And, I think, for us, the timing is just unbelievable – especially with MLS, you know, less than a year away.”

If the U.S. beats or ties Germany Thursday, it will advance to the round of 16.  Even a high-scoring loss could work since goals serve as tie-breakers.

The other teams in the group also play at noon Thursday, so the U.S. will know where it stands by the afternoon.
