Disney Union Workers Rally During Contract Negotiations June 2, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando - Hundreds of union-represented Walt Disney World workers will hold a rally Monday evening in support of a new contract. Unite Here 737 and 362 represent thousands of workers from bus drivers to housekeeping and others, are holding a rally this afternoon. Jon Gilbert, a host at Hollywood Studios Sunset Ranch Market, says the union is asking for a higher wage for cast members and lower insurance premiums during contract negotiations. “Most cast members I’ve talked to have been here for years, they aren’t even able to buy a decent car or a new home. You know, that’s the American dream, a new home.” Jacquee Wahler, a spokesperson for Walt Disney World, says the company has made an offer to the union to increase non-tipped wages to $9 per hour this year, and to $10 by 2016. "This offer reflects our appreciation and care for our Cast Members and our commitment to providing a leading employment package. We look forward to working with the union and engaging in constructive negotiations to finalize and reach a collective bargaining agreement," says Wahler. Wahler also said the company will continue to pay, on average, 75 percent of employee healthcare premiums. A union spokesperson says they’re hoping to reach a decision by summertime. |
