SunRail Hits Car, Sends One to Hospital

May 20th, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando - SunRail is up and running again after a collision Monday with a car sent the driver to the hospital. Authorities are asking for extra attention at train crossings.

The collision happened near the intersection of 17-92 and Packwood Avenue in Maitland.

State Department of Transportation spokesman Steve Olson says the car stalled on the tracks. He says the driver jumped from the car before the collision, but she was injured by flying debris.

Olson says drivers need to be extra careful at train crossings.

"We're running on a given day about 34 train trips per day. So that's a lot more trains than Central Florida has seen. You'll have the occasional Amtrak trains and freight, but now it's SunRail trains as well. And we're using the corridor quite heavily."

The collision put the train behind schedule by about 90 minutes, and traffic in the area was stopped temporarily.

The driver's injuries were not life-threatening.
