Healthy Central Florida To Fund Innovative Healthy Food Projects  Better access to healthy foods is a key mission for Healthy Central Florida, so this year it's offering 25-thousand dollars in grant money for new ideas aimed at improving food sources for the cities of Maitland, Eatonville and Winter Park. Some people planning to attend the May 14th grant workshop have already put their ideas in play. [Green beans and peas grow up corn stalks in the Fleeting Farming farmlet at East End Market] “As you can see, we have corn, growing with peas and beans up the stalks, ” says Chris Castro, as he describes a planter bed in front of the East End Market that’s part of the Fleet Farming movement he helped organize. Using space borrowed from East End Market and a few private backyards in Audubon Park, Fleet Farming is growing produce and then distributing it by bicycle to the vendors at East End Market. The goal is local farming with a zero carbon footprint. Right now the program is small. Grant money will help it expand. “What we need is enough funds to gain the initial compost, the initial seeds that we need and also get us moving with our pedal powered trailers that we attach to our bikes,” he says. Castro says the plan right now is to expand in Audubon Park, duplicate the program in the UCF area and find ways to incorporate pedal-powered composting using food waste from area restaurants. The grant workshop is being held at the East End Market and is a prerequisite for applying for a grant. |
