Orlando Venezuelans Demand Action from US Lawmakers

May 8th, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando- A group of Central Florida Venezuelans is joining a caravan to Washington DC to call for US lawmakers to impose sanctions on the government of Venezuela.

About 200 Venezuelans from across the state are making the trip.

Students began demonstrating in February against the country’s high inflation rate, food shortages and crime- sparking a crackdown from Nicholas Maduro’s government that has put hundreds of protesters behind bars and left many injured and some dead.

Orlando resident Joana Silvestri boarded a bus in Casselberry with 23 other Venezuelans heading for DC.

“And once we’re there the purpose is to go to the Senate, the White House, other organizations around the place, to ask for the government of Venezuela to be sanctioned because all of what they’re doing is affecting the human rights," she says.

Silvestri says sanctions could include restricting oil imports from Venezuela or stopping members of the Maduro government traveling to the US.

She says members of the caravan will spend Friday in DC before returning home.
