Orlando Can Compete for More Soccer Funding

May 2, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando--A bill that would let Orlando's new Major League Soccer team apply for additional funding is through the state Legislature.

The measure that passed the Senate and House Friday sets up an application process for sales-tax rebate credits.  Teams with projects involving at least $100 million in construction could request money from a $13 million pot.

Democratic Representative José Javier Rodriguez says such funding might not benefit residents – so he opposes the plan.  “If you attend the Tax Break Olympics, do not bring an economist because, when we talk about the economic benefits of these kinds of investments, they have to be very, very well vetted. The bill does not do that,” he says.

Orlando City Soccer and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer tell WMFE they see the bill as a chance to get funding for future projects.  Plans for a new stadium will proceed regardless of the governor’s signature.
