Local Evangelical Leaders Call for Immigration Reform April 22, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando--Local evangelical leaders are meeting Tuesday night to discuss immigration reform and other issues they call matters of justice. The gathering in Winter Park is ahead of a trip to Washington, D.C., next week. Tuesday’s keynote speaker is Adam Estle, a church mobilizer with the Evangelical Immigration Table. He says Christians have a moral imperative to keep immigrant families together and safe from perilous border crossings. “Jesus called us to walk with the stranger and to treat everybody fairly and with love and compassion, and so that’s what we rally around – that version of what it is to be evangelical,” he says. Estle admits some conservative Christians and organizations balk at immigration reform, saying it's a matter of border security – not justice. Estle says that can cause friction – but it’s also an opportunity for dialogue. “We see this as a pro-life issue,” he says. “We're about a comprehensive understanding of pro-life and keeping families together. And so, if the conservative movement is about families and about children and about protecting the vulnerable, then that's what we're calling them to do.” The meetings come amid reports President Barack Obama is considering a softening of deportation policies. |
