Disaster Preparedness One Focus of Public Health Week

The Orange County Health Department is using national Public Health Week to tell people that they are the starting point for community health.

Things kicked off this past weekend with a 5k walk and health fair in Orlando- but the department’s website will be featuring a number of key topics all week long- including disaster preparedness.  Orange County Health Department Director Dr. Kevin Sherin says people who’ve never used the health department might not realize what it can do for them.

“So an example where people might not know what we do, let’s say they lose their insurance plan, and mom gets pregnant, automatically we have a system to help, and we provide pre-natal care,” he says.

Sherin says the health department is core to the area’s hurricane preparedness and is responsible for running medical needs shelters when evacuations are ordered. Other county health departments are also hosting special events and online information for Public Health Week.
