Find Free Tax Help in Central Florida

April 8, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando--Federal income tax filings are due in a week. Last-minute, free help is available to Central Florida residents.

The IRS offers free, in-person tax help during events at about 400 Florida sites.  The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, or VITA, is for anyone who earns $52,000 a year or less.

IRS Florida Spokesman Michael Dobzinski says most Americans seek professional tax help.  “Most of the software programs out there, if you do it on your own, are going to ask you a number of questions so that you can do it,” he says.  “But, we know there’s a number of people out there who don’t like doing their taxes on their own who choose to see a tax professional.”

Dobzinski says paying for tax assistance probably won’t unearth huge savings.  He says people choosing that option should confirm a preparer’s experience, charges and preparer tax identification number.

Among the local VITA hosts are Florida United Way, Goodwill Industries of Central Florida and public libraries.
