Spotlight: Russian Icons at the Polasek Museum

March 28, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando--90.7's new arts, culture and entertainment segment, Spotlight looks at a Russian Orthodox exhibit at the Polasek Museum this week. Spotlight airs every Friday at 5:50 p.m. during the last ten minutes of All Things Considered.

Spotlight features commentaries from Mark Baratelli of The Daily City and Restaurant Critic Scott Joseph.  It adds to those existing favorites a weekly interview with a community member who can shine a spotlight on Central Florida.

Click “play audio” above to hear about an art form some believe can bridge heaven and earth.  Icons are a kind of functional, holy art – revered in multiple religions as connectors to the gods and saints they depict.  A current exhibit at the Albin Polasek Museum in Winter Park features icons of the Russian Orthodox tradition.  It’s called The Holy Art of Imperial Russia: Icons from the 17^th Century to the Early 20^th Century.  Collection owner, Gary Hollingsworth of Hollingsworth Fine Arts and Museum Exhibits, tells 90.7's Amy Kiley how the art reflects history.
