Florida Lawmakers Urge Action on Venezuela

March 24th, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando- Central Florida US Congressman Alan Grayson has signed onto a bill that aims to penalize members of the Venezuelan government for alleged human rights violations.

The bipartisan Venezuelan Liberty and Democratic Solidarity Act was introduced by South Florida Republican representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen on March 13th.

Grayson, a Democrat who represents Florida’s Congressional district 9, including Osceola and parts of Orange and Polk Counties, joins 12 other lawmakers cosponsoring the bill.

The bill calls for punishment for members of Venezuela’s government, by various means including freezing their assets and denying them visas to enter the United States.

Central Florida’s Venezuelan community has been outspoken in condemning the Venezuelan government, led by Nicolas Maduro, for its response to student led protests.

More than 30 people have died in protests which began in February over soaring crime and food shortages.
