Twice the Size of Space Shuttles and Coming to Port Canaveral

March 28, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando--The Canaveral Port Authority says massive, ship-to-shore cranes should arrive tomorrow, depending on weather. The cranes are part of a multi-million dollar expansion at the port.

The cranes are twice as tall and twice as heavy as space shuttles, so barges will bring them to Port Canaveral from Savannah.

The cranes are looming evidence of the port’s investment in shipping expansion, explains Shannon Feeley.  The assistant director of Cargo Business Development says, "Getting container cranes at Port Canaveral is a game changer for Port Canaveral because it puts us in the container market.  It allows us to recruit those large, containerized vessels that are iconic, that everyone sees at all the ports around the world."

The cranes will begin operating in a new container terminal this fall.  It’s part of an expansion serving cruise ships and funneling cargo from barges to rail lines.

The expansion costs tens of millions of dollars, and the Authority says it will generate thousands of jobs.
