Port Canaveral, MCO Pledge Closer Cooperation

February 5th, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando- Central Florida's Airport and Seaport Authorities say they're going to work closely together to boost the region's economy.

Officials from Orlando International Airport and Port Canaveral met at the port Wednesday to discuss the partnership.  

The number of passengers traveling through Port Canaveral is expected to double from 4 million to around 8 million in 2020.

Port Canaveral CEO John Walsh says closer collaboration is essential.  

“The port will tie closer together with Orlando international airport," he told airport officials.

"We need you. Your growth, your continued expansion, is essential for this port to expand or our plans will come to a grinding halt.”

Walsh also highlighted plans to expand the region’s cargo distribution. 

Currently, most imported produce is delivered by road from northern states, but airport and seaport Officials want to change that.

Walsh says the port is opening up a new terminal this summer to bring in more cargo.

“That fruit and produce market, along with a whole array of commodities, we think is a very strong market for us to work together with," says Walsh, adding it requires "strong secondary air distribution.”

He says what’s needed is a distribution center between Orlando international airport and port Canaveral.

Wednesday's meeting was also attended by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, and Frank Kruppenbacher Chairman of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority
