Eastern Florida State College Revises Gun Policy

February 4th, 2014 | WMFE, Orlando- Eastern Florida State College says it will allow guns in cars on campus- providing they're kept secure. The policy change follows a shooting incident at the Palm Bay campus last Thursday- and a lawsuit from a gun owner's rights group.

Police say the student pulled a gun out of his car and shot a man who was beating him with a pool cue.

Eastern Florida State College spokesman John Glisch says the student is now back in class.

"We're glad to work with him to get him back going in his studies," said Glisch.

"He remains a full time student and he’s not facing any type of disciplinary action," he added.

Meanwhile the gun rights group Florida Carry filed a Lawsuit Monday challenging the college’s policy prohibiting guns on campus.

Glisch says the college was already working on a policy change to bring it in line with a ruling from a case involving Florida Carry and the University of North Florida.

In December the 1st district appeals court ruled Florida universities and colleges can’t stop people from storing guns in cars on campus.

Glisch says Eastern State College started should have its new policy in place by the end of the week.
