Mica: VA Hospital Delays Point to Broader Problems

January 27, 2014 | WMFE Orlando - Congressman John Mica says the Orlando VA Medical Center is no different from three or four others under construction that are behind schedule and over-budget. The Central Florida Republican was in Orlando on Monday to tour the hospital.

The hospital now is projected to be complete near the end of the year, more than two years late. Mica estimates construction is between $75 million and $100 million over-budget.

A nursing home already is open, and a domiciliary for homeless veterans is scheduled to open within a few weeks.

"We're no different than three or four other projects. We need to look federally at how we probably dislodge some of that from VA and get these hospitals built better with less cost over-runs, less hassle."

Mica says the hospital is needed for the influx of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and also older veterans moving to Central Florida from up north.

He says the closest veterans' hospital now is in Tampa.
