Report: Flu Causes Death Of Orange County Child

January 24, 2014 | Orlando, WMFE - The Orange County Department of Health says a school-aged child has died from the flu.

Reports indicate the child, whose identifying information was not released, had underlying health conditions. Health officials say pre-existing health issues often play a role in how an individual reacts to the flu.

Medical experts say most flu cases are mild, but there are exceptions.

Earlier this month, two women in their mid-30s died from the flu in Brevard County. Several others remain hospitalized.

North Florida health officials report that twelve people have died from the flu at a Gainesville hospital since October. Five were under the age of 40.

The Orange County Health Department says it’s not too late in the virus season to get the current flu vaccine.
