Further Investigation, Possible Grand Jury Warranted for Expressway Authority, Ashton Says

January 17, 2014 | WMFE - State Attorney Jeff Ashton is urging the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority to delay hiring its new executive director, former state Rep. Steve Precourt. Ashton says he suspects state laws may have been broken in the ouster of the expressway authority's previous director, Max Crumit.

Ashton says he's still investigating allegations some board members privately discussed Crumit's ouster before voting him out last year.

That would violate the state's open government laws.

In a letter to the expressway authority's attorney, Ashton says he's seen enough to raise suspicion. He says further investigation and possibly a grand jury are warranted.

Ashton recommends a delay in Precourt's hiring so that he can take office without a "cloud of suspicion."

Precourt responded with a statement saying the expressway authority's work is "time sensitive."
