Zimmerman Trial Tops "Florida Story of the Year" List

December 31, 2013 | WMFE - The murder trial of George Zimmerman for the fatal shooting of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin is Florida's story of the year. That's according to a group of Florida newspaper and broadcast editors looking back at 2013's most compelling topics in the Sunshine State.

The group of news editors picked Zimmerman’s Seminole County trial, in which he was acquitted of all charges, as the state's top story the year. They said the situation addressed elements of complex subjects confronting America, bringing issues surrounding race and gun control into the fore.

The second-place editors’ pick is the Florida Legislature's refusal to expand the state's Medicaid program.

Coming in at number three is the disclosure of records by The Miami New Times linking an anti-aging clinic to the distribution of performance-enhancing drugs to major league baseball players.

Rounding out the top five stories were Florida's revived efforts to remove non-US citizens from voter rolls, and former Republican Governor Charlie Crist's announcement to run as a Democrat against incumbent GOP Governor Rick Scott.
