A New Total of 8 Bands Cancel SeaWorld Performances December 17, 2013 | WMFE - More performers have canceled their appearances at SeaWorld Orlando after a recent documentary raised questions and prompted online petitions about the park's treatment of marine mammals. Representatives for Martina McBride, .38 Special and REO Speedwagon confirmed Monday that they will join five other recording artists who have pulled out of theme park's February concert series. Musicians Trisha Yearwood, Cheap Trick, Heart, Barenaked Ladies and Willie Nelson have also canceled their performances. Additionally, Joan Jett has asked SeaWorld to stop playing her song “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” in the park. The bands have been urged to boycott the park by petitions on the website change.org. The petitions have thousands of signatures. The outcry has been triggered by the documentary "Blackfish." The film is critical of SeaWorld as it examines the 2010 death of trainer Dawn Brancheau. The 40-year-old was pulled into the water and drowned by a killer whale. SeaWorld released a statement late last week saying they respect the bands’ decision but are, quote, “disappointed a small group of misinformed individuals was able to deny fans what would have been great concerts.” Park officials have also invited the bands to the parks to see for themselves how the animals are treated. |
