FWC Biologists Euthanize Bear Suspected of Longwood Mauling

December 5th, 2013 | WMFE- Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission staff have trapped and euthanized a bear thought to have mauled a woman in Longwood.

54 year old Susan Chalfant suffered serious injuries after she was attacked while walking her dogs through the neighborhood off Markham Woods Road Monday night.

FWC public information officer Karen Parker says biologists caught an adult female bear weighing 200 to 250 pounds last night.

“And basically what had been decided was if the bear had a close resemblance to the bear matching the description in the incident then we were going to put it down,” says Parker.

A DNA sample from the bear is being analysed.

Until it’s confirmed this was the bear in the attack, traps will remain in place around the neighborhood, and residents are being urged to take care.

Parker says a juvenile bear that was captured in the area earlier this week has been relocated.

People walking in areas where bear sightings are common are being advised to walk in pairs and take a noise maker - like an air horn, a jar of coins or a bell - to try and scare off any bears they encounter.
