The study from Brigham and Woman’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School is the largest study to date looking at nuts and longevity. It concluded that people who regularly eat nuts have a 20-percent lower risk of dying from cancer, heart disease and respiratory disease. If you like to eat nuts and you like to eat local, you can do both. Nuts grown in Florida include pecans, chestnuts, walnuts and macadamia nuts. MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando Registered Dietitian Dawn Napoli says any nuts are great.

“You really want to get a wide variety of any types of nuts, whether it’s peanuts, almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, pistachios, anything along those lines is perfectly fine,” she says.

The Florida Department of Agriculture says most of our nut growers are small farmers, so the best place to look for locally grown nuts is at the farmer’s market.  The Harvard study was funded in part by the International Tree Nut Council Nutrition Research & Education Foundation.
