More Red Light Cameras Coming to Orange County

November 12th, 2013 | WMFE- A new internal study says Orange County's Red Light Camera pilot program is working, and engineers are preparing to install dozens of new cameras.

Results from the study come as the Florida Supreme Court considers a challenge to the state’s Red Light Camera law, and lawmakers say they propose changes to it in 2014.

Krista Barber, who is a Project Manager for the county’s Traffic Engineering Division, says the study compared the year before the cameras were installed with the year after.

“We did an evaluation of last full year which is July 2011 to June 2012, and then July 2012 to June 2013, to determine what kind of differences there were in the number of violations, the number of crashes, the crash rate, and the volumes of those intersections,” says Barber.

Barber says the number of crashes decreased by 14 percent and the number of red-light runners dropped by 25 percent.

Orange County plans to have cameras up at 40 more intersections by next April.
