City Officials Approve Sale of Police Station Land to Orlando Magic  November 5, 2013 | WMFE - The Orlando Magic has been given the go-ahead to buy the Orlando Police station and a public parking garage near the Amway Center. A company affiliated with the team wants to build a 650,000-square-foot entertainment complex on the land. SED Development’s plans for the $200 million entertainment complex include a convention center, hotel, and office and retail space. In a land sale deal approved by Orlando commissioners Monday, the city would receive $12.7 million from the Magic. Construction could begin at the parking garage site on Church Street and Hughey Avenue by next summer, but work on the adjacent police station site may take several years as the Orlando Police Department builds a new home. Once the sale goes through, the city would pay the Magic $100,000 a year until OPD moves. The hunt for a place to build new police headquarters has been an ongoing project. Magic officials say the complex will create hundreds of short-term and long-term jobs. |
