Ocoee Men Charged with Selling Fake Bullet-proof Vests

October 21st, 2013 | WMFE- Three Central Florida men - inlcuding a former Ocoee City Commissioner- have been arrested and charged with selling fake bullet proof vests. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement says the vests provided no ballistic protection.

Alpha Sports owner Scott Anderson allegedly sold the vests at gun shows across Florida.

Anderson is a former Ocoee City Commissioner.

The FDLE says Scott Williams and Arami Rodriguez worked for Anderson and helped make the fake vests.

Special agent Daniel Banks says the vests were reassembled from old and expired body armor.

He says when the counterfeits were tested, bullets went right through them.

“One of the materials they used was duct tape to hold it together, and that is not an industry standard, and that is not something that really should be used in the manufacturing of ballistic vests," says Banks.

The three men are charged with one count each of organized scheme to defraud and counterfeiting body armor.

Banks says the fakes were sold with labels copied from genuine brands including Point Blank, OMTactical, Safariland and Diamondback Tactical- as well as a fictitious company called Full Dragon Armor.

He says more than a thousand counterfeit bullet proof vests may have been sold in the past two years, and anyone who thinks they could have bought one of the fakes should contact the manufacturer.
