Orlando Commissioners Vote to Fund Major League Soccer Stadium

October 7, 2013 | WMFE - City commissioners have voted to make $20 million available for a new soccer stadium in downtown Orlando. The vote Monday clears another hurdle for the minor league Orlando City Soccer Club to go major league.

Orlando City Soccer Club President Phil Rawlins says he's always wanted a major league team for Orlando.

"And we're very very close to doing that. We hope to make that announcement in the next few weeks," he told city commissioners. "Of course, with your support."

The unanimous vote also makes funding available to the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Citrus Bowl, Visit Orlando and Central Florida Sports Commission.

The county commission will vote Oct. 22 on the funding.

Funding for the stadium is contingent on Major League Soccer granting the Orlando City Soccer Club's bid to become a major league team.

The stadium would be built on Church Street two blocks west of the Amway Center.
