Associates of Ibragim Todashev Complain of FBI Intimidation

September 25th, 2013 | WMFE- A Tampa based civil rights group is accusing the FBI of intimidating friends of a Chechen born man who was killed during an investigation earlier this year. The Florida chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations wants the Department of Justice to investigate what it calls "egregious civil rights violations."

CAIR Florida says friends and associates of Ibragim Todashev are complaining of frivolous investigations, intimidation and unlawful threats by the FBI.

Todashev was shot and killed in Orlando in May while being questioned by the FBI about his acquaintance with Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

CAIR says it has received several reports from associates of Todashev who said the FBI threatened to arrest them unless they became informants.

Most recently the group says the FBI arrested Ashor Miraliev, who had been helping Todashev's father while he visited Florida.

CAIR says the FBI interviewed Miraliev after ignoring his request for an attorney.

The group is calling for the Department of Justice to rein in what it describes as "abuse of ethics and the rule of law by overzealous agents.”

The FBI released this statement to 90.7 News:

“The FBI cannot comment on ongoing investigations, including who we interview and why. However, anytime the FBI interviews an individual it is done either with his/her consent or with an attorney present.”
