Scott Announces $37 Million for Florida's Springs September 4, 2013 | WMFE - Gov. Rick Scott is announcing $37 million dollars in projects to improve Florida's springs. The governor made the announcement Wednesday at Central Florida's Wekiwa Springs State Park. He was joined by other state and local leaders including the Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Herschel Vinyard. Scott said projects are planned for 10 springs statewide including Wekiwa Springs. "One, we cannot continue to grow our state if we don't focus on the quality of water. All of the recreation we have. We have over 20 million visitors a year just to our state parks, our 171 state parks and trails. They care about the water quality here." The state will provide $10 million. The rest will come from the state Department of Environmental Protection, water management districts and other sources. A $3.5 million project will expand Apopka's reclaimed water service and reduce pollution flowing into the Wekiva river system. Other projects are planned for Silver Springs, Ichetucknee Springs and the Suwannee River Springs. |
