St. Augustine Civil Rights Library to Go Online  August 27, 2013 | WMFE - A new online library put together by Flagler College students is commemorating the civil rights struggle that took place in Saint Augustine almost 50 years ago. [Image: Flagler College, formerly Hotel Ponce de Leon] The Civil Rights Library of Saint Augustine is set to come online next month. The Internet-based multimedia archive will mark its debut with a ceremony at the Hotel Ponce de Leon at Flagler College. In March 1964, about 100 students from an all-black high school marched in downtown Saint Augustine then held a sit-in at the segregated dining hall of the Hotel Ponce de Leon. The demonstrators were arrested. It was the first sit-in of the civil rights movement in the Nation's Oldest City. Items in the database include the FBI files detailing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s time in St. Augustine, audio from Jackie Robinson’s visit to the area, and the archives of civil rights leader Andrew Young. The hotel, built by industrialist Henry Flagler in the late 1880s, is now a part of the Flagler College campus. |
