Orange County Domestic Violence Commission Gives Final Report, Expands Role to Implement Changes  August 20, 2013 | WMFE - Orange County's Domestic Violence Commission on Tuesday presented its final report to county commissioners. Now, commission members are tasked with implementing the changes they proposed. Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs formed the commission in February to investigate improvements and new strategies for handling the issue after a spike in local domestic violence-related murders. The final report gave 24 recommendations, like expanding law enforcement data sharing, providing victim advocates, and requiring training for personnel who deal with domestic violence cases from response to a victim’s call for help through sentencing an offender. Commission Co-Chair and former state House Representative Dick Batchelor told county commissioners that while recommendations are “fine,” putting them into practice is the key. “What we’re going to have is the Domestic Violence Commission kind of moving over into a Domestic Violence Working Group, so we can do the implementation of these recommendations, and hopefully we’ll come back to you sometime in a few months and give you an update as to what we’re doing,” said Batchelor. “Because we fully intend to work very hard to be sure that every recommendation can be implemented.” Batchelor said all the members of the commission have committed to stay on and help implement the changes. |
