Florida Clergy Joins "Stand Your Ground" Protesters in Tallahassee

July 26th, 2013 | WMFE - Religious leaders from across Florida spent last night camped outside Governor Rick Scott's Tallahassee office, in support of student protesters who have been sleeping there for over a week. The student protest group Dream Defenders is calling for a special legislative session to repeal Florida's "Stand Your Ground" Law.

Pastor Eddie Walker led the Orlando delegation from the faith-based PICO Network to last night’s demonstration. Walker says he was moved by the students’ level of commitment, even though Governor Scott has turned down their demand for a special session so far.

“Seeing our youth come together and organize was the most important part, and seeing their dedication to see justice done,” says Walker.

The Dream Defenders began their Capitol vigil three days after George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the shooting death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin. Members say they’ll continue to camp outside Governor Scott’s office until he agrees to the special session on “Stand Your Ground.”
