Sanford church and city leaders gathered Monday in the first community prayer session since a jury found George Zimmerman not guilty in the shooting of teenager Trayvon Martin.

The prayer sessions are organized by Sanford Pastors Connecting, a group of pastors that formed  to bring healing and reconciliation to the area after the shooting.

Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett  attended the service Monday. He says it's time for the city to "write a new chapter."

"The city of sanford will continue to move forward and hopefully when we talk five years from now on the anniversary of this you’ll see that we’ve taken it and we’ve continue the steps that we’ve already started”

Pastors lead the group in prayer for both the Martin and Zimmerman families.

Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith told the congregation while some may not like the outcome of the trial, residents of Sanford need to express themselves safely and peacefully.

About 50 people attended the service.

The noonday prayer services will continue at churches across Seminole county every monday.
