During the shuttle program the fifteen thousand foot long concrete runway was used by orbiters returning from space At a news conference at the Space Center Friday NASA administrator Charles Bolden said Space Florida, the state's commercial aerospace development agency, will head negotiations to use and maintain the facility. “This will continue to expand Kennedy’s viability as a multi-user space port and strengthen the economic opportunities of Florida and the nation.” Private companies like XCOR are eager to use the runway for horizontal launches and landings of their space plane. Other companies involved in NASA's commercial crew program could also use the site. |
