March 15, 2013 | WMFE - Passengers from the troubled Carnival Dream cruise ship are arriving at Orlando International Airport today after the ship's owner arranged to fly them back to the US. Many of the passengers will be bussed from Orlando to Port Canaveral, the Carnival Dream's home port. Some other passengers are being flown directly to their home cities.

Officials with the cruise line say the ship encountered problems with its backup generator during a scheduled port of call Wednesday in St. Maarten. Carnival says 4,363 passengers were onboard the ship.

The company says there were brief malfunctions with the elevators and toilets Wednesday night. But passengers phoning relatives in the US report overflowing toilets and elevators that, they say, have been working intermittently since Wednesday night.

The company says engineers are working on the technical problems.

The Dream's scheduled March 16th voyage from Port Canaveral has been canceled.

Another Carnival ship is reportedly having problems in the Caribbean.

Last night, the company reported that a technical issue was affecting the sailing speed of the Carnival Legend and forced the cancellation of a stop at Grand Cayman Islands.

The Legend is expected to arrive in Tampa as scheduled Sunday following a seven-day cruise.

These incidents come one month after more than 4000 passengers on the Carnival Triumph were stranded for five days in the Gulf of Mexico. Passengers say they endured food shortages, raw sewage running in corridors and tent cities for sleeping on deck.

The Miami based Carnival Cruise Lines is facing a class action lawsuit in the aftermath of that incident.
