Buddy Dyer: "I Will NOT Run for Governor"

February 27th, 2013 |WMFE- On Wednesday Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer put an end to speculation about a potential run for Governor. The announcement came during Dyer's annual "state of the City" address.

Mayor Dyer acknowledged there has been a lot of speculation over the last year that he might run for the post of Governor.

"I have been humbled by the support of those who have said the partnership focused stye of leadership that I have worked to bring to Orlando is desperately needed state wide," said Dyer.

"So after careful consideration I have decided I will not run for Governor."

Dyer said he would rather spend the next few years at city hall focusing on the city's economic recovery than on the campaign trail.

"I believe I have a responsibility to the people of Orlando to finish what we started, and the next few years are going to be critical in terms of our economic recovery and our efforts to create the jobs of the future," Dyer said.

Central Florida political pundits had rated Dyer as a good chance in a match up with incumbent Gov. Rick Scott, who has faced low approval ratings in the last 12 months.

But with former Republican Florida governor Charlie Crist switching to the Democratic ticket at the end of last year, speculation was mounting about whether Dyer's name would still be in the mix of gubernatorial challengers.

Other possible Democratic contenders along with Crist include former gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink, former state senator Dan Gelber and former state senator Nan Rich.
