January 18, 2013 | WMFE- Opponents of the Creative Village project launched a campaign Thursday night to stop what they describe as gentrification of Parramore.

A small group of residents, business owners and activists met at a childcare center in Parramore, in the first step of what they say will be a year-long campaign.

Former Orlando mayoral candidate Mike Cantone, one of the meeting organizers, questioned whether the creative village would benefit local residents.

Lawanna Gelzer, who is the president of the Women of Color Leadership Coalition, said she wants more development funds spent on the neighborhood.

Gelzer said she is worried by the 20 year time frame for the creative village. She said she would prefer the city to spend money to improve streets and housing in Parramore in the near term.

Campaign organizers say they plan to hold more meetings around Parramore in the coming months.
