Winter Park Rep. John Mica Gets New Committee Assignments

January 3, 2012 | WMFE - Congressional leaders are handing out new assignments on Capitol Hill in the wake of November's election, and Thursday, Representative John Mica of Winter Park announced his new marching orders. The Central Florida Republican will head a House subcommittee that keeps an eye on government spending.

After maxing out his chairmanship of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Mica will now head the Government Operations Subcommittee.

It is a watchdog panel that investigates the federal government’s efficiency, and is part of the broader committee for Oversight and Government Reform. Mica will also remain on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, although he can no longer serve as Chair due to House rules.

But with a total of eleven years on transportation panels under his belt, he’ll have seniority on that committee. In that time, Mica championed a number of Central Florida projects, notably the 61-mile SunRail commuter line currently under construction.

SunRail will connect Volusia, Seminole, Orange and Osceola counties, and is expected to be fully operational by 2016.
