December 19, 2012 | WMFE - More than a hundred thousand Florida state employees could get a pay raise, if a proposed bill becomes law. Surveys of state employees throughout the US show that Florida's public service worker are paid far less than people who work for other states.

Representative Dwayne Taylor, a Democrat from Daytona Beach, filed a bill this week to give all state employees a two percent raise. People who work in the courts, at the Department of Motor vehicles, for colleges and universities and for the state Legislature would be among those eligible for a bump in pay.

Rep. Taylor says two percent is a modest start and he wishes it could be 20 percent.

“We have some of the most dedicated, faithful and hardworking public servants.” Taylor says. “These people are serving the citizens of our state daily and I just want to make sure that they know that they are greatly appreciated.”

The last time state workers got a pay raise was in 2006.

Compared with other states, Florida has the lowest payroll cost and the fewest government employees per resident.

No companion bill has been filed yet in the Senate.
